EUROPEAN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP '96 "CSSR 1976" Royal Mint Issue Silver Medal, Proof. aFDC

The 1976 final in Belgrade was one of the closest fought encounters since the competition began. Finalists Czechoslovakia and West Germany met tough resistance in their semi-final showdowns. The final proved to be just as closely contested. With the score at 2-2 in extra time, the game went into penalties. Matching each other shot for shot, Uli Hoeness finally broke the stalemate for West Germany when his shot went over the bar. At the other end. Panenka sent German keeper, Maier, the wrong way to score the winner for Czechoslovakia - worthy winners at 3 - 2.
