1994 United Kingdom Silver Proof "Piedfort" One Pound Coin. The 1994 one pound, first of a series honouring Scotland. The 'ruddy lion ramping in his field of tressure gold' has been part of the Royal arms of Scotland since at least the time of Alexander II (1214-1249). A highly potent symbol of Scottish national identity, the lion rampant naturally became a regular feature on the coinage of Scotland and, having first appeared in the middle of the fourteenth century on the gold noble of David II, was thereafter to be found on the Scottish coins struck up to the Act of Union in 1707. Its depiction on the reverse of the one pound coin therefore embodies six centuries of numismatic tradition. Surrounded by a double tressure which is flowered and counter-flowered. Piedfort are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks. This one pound coin, struck to the highest proof quality in Sterling 0.925 silver, weighs 19.00 grams and measures 22.5 millimetres in diameter. GRADE: Stunning, FDC as Issued with Certificate.
