1997 United Kingdom Silver Proof "Piedfort" One Pound Coin. The 1997 one pound, the final issue in a four-year series representing the four constituent parts of the United Kingdom, honours England. It features on its reverse an heraldic design of the three lions modelled by Norman Sillman from a drawing by the College of Arms. The three lions, officially described for the 1997 one pound as 'Gules, three lions passant guardant in pale or', was first adopted by Richard I, otherwise known as Richard the Lionheart, King of England (1189-1199). On their own they continued to comprise the Royal Arms of England until 1340 The obverse bears Raphael Maklouf's exquisite portrait of Her Majesty the Queen. Piedforts are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks. This one pound coin, struck to the highest proof quality in sterling .925 silver, weighs 19.00 g and measures 22.5 mm in diameter. GRADE: Stunning FDC as Issued with Certificate.
