Piedfort are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks. As their name suggests they have close associations with France, where from the twelfth century they were apparently issued by the King as presentation pieces. In Britain the practice of striking pied forts is later and less frequent, but medieval and Tudor examples are known. This one pound coin, struck to the highest proof quality sterling 0.925 silver, weighs 19.00 grammes and measures 22.5 millimetres in diameter.
