1985 £1 One Pound, " Piedfort" reverse, features the National Emblem of Wales -the Leek, designed by Silversmith Leslie Durbin, is described in the Proclamation as 'a Leek eradicated enfiling a representation of Our Royal Diadem'. The Welsh inscription PLEIDIOL WYF I'M GWLAD, (True am I to my Country') The obverse carries the new effigy of Her Majesty The Queen by the sculptor Raphael Maklouf. Pied forts are coins which have been specially struck on thicker than normal blanks. As their name suggests they have close associations with France, where from the twelfth century they were apparently issued by the King as presentation pieces. In Britain the practice of striking pied forts is later and less frequent, but medieval and Tudor examples are known. This one pound coin, struck to the highest proof quality in sterling .925 silver, weighs 19.00 grammes and measures 22.5 millimetres in diameter.
