STRUCK TO CELEBRATE THE 400TH ANNIVERSART OF THE FIRST SIGHTING OF THE ISLANDS. Struck in Sterling (.925) silver to Proof quality this £5 coin weighs 28.28 grams and measures 38.61 mm and limited to just 20,000 pieces. The first recorded sighting of the Falkland Islands was made by John Davis, Captain of the Queen's Ship DESIRE, in 1592. To commemorate the 400th anniversary the Royal Mint has been authorised to strike a limited number of silver Proof £5 coins for the Falkland Islands. The reverse of this beautiful commemorative coin, designed by Dutch sculptor Willem Vis, features a representation of John Davis' ship DESIRE, a late sixteenth-century English Galleon of about 130 tonnes. The obverse bears the uncoupled version of Raphael Maklouf's elegant portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
