Falkland Island Mount Pleasant Airport. Silver Proof Commemorative Fifty pence coin. Alloy: 0.925 Sterling Silver. Weight: 28.28 Diameter: 38.61 Issue limit to 5,000 The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf. The reverse shows a finely detailed portrait of HRH Prince Andrew, modelled by Robert Elderton. of the Royal Mint. NOTES: Following the repossession of the Falkland Islands in June 1982, the British Government decided to construct an airport capable of taking wide-bodied aircraft to provide for the defence of the Islands, and also to offer opportunity for their future economic developments. Such an airport would normally take a minimum of five years to plan construct and complete, but Mount Pleasant has been opened within three years. To commemorate the official opening by HRH Prince Andrew on 12 May, and in acknowledgement of the skill, efficiency and determination of those involved in its construction, the Royal Mint has issued this Sterling Silver Proof Coin.
