Canada, Dollar 1999 'Voyage of Perez Dollar' Silver Proof-Like in Capsule of issue FDC

£28.00

This coin has been designed by Canadian artist and designer David Craig. It shows the Spanish ship Santiago being approached by the Haida people in their canoes. This event took place in 1774 and it was the culmination of a voyage made by Spanish explorer Juan Perez. He sailed north from California to extend Spanish territory along the Pacific coast of North America and, on reaching a group of islands called Haida Gwaii, the inhabitants sailed out to greet him. They were friendly and offered trade, but before Perez could go ashore a storm forced him away from the islands, never to return.
