Jersey, 2008 Five Pounds RAF "R.J MITCHELL" Silver Proof.

Reginald Joseph Mitchell could fairly claim to have changed the course of world history. He designed the Super-marine Spitfire - or more correctly the Super-marine Type 300 Monoplane, later to fly as the Prototype K5054. The Spitfire became world famous, especially after it played a decisive role in winning the Battle of Britain. Mitchell was born in Stoke on Trent on 20 May 1895. His parents were both teachers and he was one of five children. He worked first for Kerr Stuart, a firm of locomotive builders. Later he moved to Super-marine Aviation and between 1920 and 1936 designed 24 different aircraft of all types, from lightweight fighters to massive seaplanes and bombers. Mitchell designed the Super-marine seaplane that won Schneider Trophy three times, culminating in the victory of the S6B, giving the Trophy permanently to Britain. In 1938 the first production spitfire K9787 came out of Supermarine's Woolston works. Sadly, Mitchell died in 1937 and thus did not witness his creation's triumphs.
