Jersey, 2008 Five Pounds RAF "COASTAL COMMAND" Silver Proof

At the beginning of WWII Coastal Command was very much the "poor relation" of Fighter and Bomber Commands. However, the acquisition of Wellingtons and Beau-fighters, and the use of depth charges instead of bombs, greatly increased Coastal Command's effectiveness. Even more useful were the Short Sunderland Flying Boat, the VLR (Very Long Range) Liberator and B-17Es. These new and capable aircraft meant that by early 1943 Coastal Command was winning the Battle of the Atlantic. In 1944 during an attack on a U-Boat, Flying Officer John Cruickshank was seriously wounded by flak. Despite his wounds he attacked and sank the U-Boat. Although several times losing consciousness, he helped fly and land the stricken Catalina on its 5½-hour return journey. He was awarded the Victoria Cross. In 1943 William Sholton Douglas had been a pilot in WW1, winning an MC and FC the Victoria Cross In William Sholto Douglas took over as C-in-C of Coastal Command for the period of the invasion of Normandy in 1944. Douglas had been a pilot in WWI, winning an MC and DFC.
