The success of operation Chastise depended not just on the right men and tactics, but also the right tools for the job. These were the Avro Lancaster Bomber and the "Bouncing Bomb". The Air Ministry formed 617 squadron under Wing Commander Guy Gibson, who drew on the most skilled and experienced crews in the RAF to build his team. They trained exhaustively around the reservoirs and lakes of Derbyshire, before carrying out the operation on the night of 16/17 May 1943. 19 Lancasters attacked the dams in the Ruhr valley. beaching the Mohne and Eder dams.
