Guernsey, 2008 Five Pounds RAF "FORMATION OF THE RAF 1918" Silver Proof.

1st April 2008 marks the 90th anniversary of the RAF, which was formed by the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service. The new RAF had a wartime strength of 291.000 personnel and over 22,000 a aircraft. Their ranks included not just RAF greats such as Hugh Dowding )head of Fighter Command in WWII) and Arthur "Bomber" Harris (head of Bomber Command) but others such as cricketer Jack Hobbs, W.E. Johns (author of the famous "Biggles" books), and ballroom dancer Vernon Castle. Through the 1920s and early 1930s while the aircraft of the RAF developed in power, reliability and capability, they were still recognizably developments of WWI machines, wood-framed biplanes with open cockpits and canvas skins. From mid 1930 a new breed of military aircraft emerged - high-speed, stressed skin and closed cockpits (later pressurised) , typified by the Super-marine Spitfire and the Bf 109.
