Western Samoa, 1995 $10 'Lady of the Century' Silver Proof in Capsule & Royal Mint Certificate

£39.00

The official Commemorative Coin in Honour of H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. The reverse of this splendid silver coin for Western Samoa, modelled by former Royal Mint engraver Frederick Mogford. The Obverse depicts the Coat of Arms of Western Samoa. YOUNG LADY ELIZABETH and "BOB'S" HER PONY.
It was an idyllic childhood for Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, now H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. Romping around the Scottish vastness of her family home at Glamis Castle, she learned to fly fish, sew and cook, but it was here that she developed her lifelong passion for horses. She and her brother would ride pony carts to picnics when the family went shooting, and she must have yearned for a pony of her own, especially as there was so much space in the grounds of the family's Scottish home. One day, her wish was granted, and she became the proud owner of 'Bobs', a sturdy but lively pony on which she would trot all around the estate. The design on this coin evokes the carefree days before she married into the Royal family, the period when she and her brother were so inseparable that their mother dubbed them the "two Benjamin's".
