Barbados, Ten-Dollar 1974 Silver Proof FDC. Minted by the Franklin Mint in Sterling silver Proof, encapsulated within card. The coin measures 42mm (over 1.1/2 inches) & weighs-in at over an ounce at 1.1271.oz ASW. Coin accompanied by Certificate of Authenticity. Eons ago, the island, named Barbados by a Portuguese explorer in 1536, rose from the ocean. With this beginning from the sea, it is appropriate that the largest of the island's coins features Neptune - the mythical Roman god of the seas. Sculptured by Philip Nathan, the portrait of King Neptune shows him in all his majesty, able to command all the creatures living in the sea - even the mighty ocean itself - with but a single motion of his trident. Minted by the Franklin Mint in Sterling silver Proof, the coin measures 42mm (over 1.1/2 inches) & weighs-in at over an ounce at 1.1271.oz ASW. The official Barbados coat of arms is on the reverse of the ten-dollar coin. The coat of arms features a shield supported by a dolphin and a pelican - symbols of the island's fishing industry. On the shield are two "Pride of Barbados" flowers and one of the island's bearded fig trees. Depicted above the shield is a crest consisting of a helmet and mantling above which is a raised forearm. Two crossed sugar cane stalks form the topmost element of the crest. GRADE: FDC
