The Swede Carl von Linne (1707-1778) was one of the most famous European scientists of the 18th century. This silver ECU issued by EU-member Sweden celebrates the memory of the man who, as founder and first President of the Swedish Academy of Sciences was closely involved in the establishment of many private and public museums and collections dedicated to the natural science. In his principal scientific work, the "Systema Naturae", Carl von Linne laid the foundation for the systematic recording of all biological life forms, and created for the first time a unified Language of biological terminology.
