Portugal, 1998 Official 25 ECUs Commemorative "Alfonso de Albuquerque"

Alfonson de Albuquerque was raised at the court of King V and first distinguished himself in battles against the Turks (1480) and in North Africa (1503, King Emanuel sent him on an expedition to India. During the outward voyage, the Portuguese navigator discovered Zanzibar and conquered Cochin. At the end of 1506 he began his second expedition to India, assuming the position of Viceroy there a few years later. Over the ensuing years, Albuquerque greatly extended Portugal's influence. In November 1510, he captured Goa, subsequently the hub of Portuguese dominance in India. He then Malacca (1511) and advanced as far as the Moluccas, finally reaching the Red Sea. At Aden, his triumphal progress was halted; despite the most violent bombardment, it could not be captured. Shortly before his death he was dismissed as the result of false accusations. He was succeeded as Viceroy by his hated enemy, Lopo Soares de Alborgaria.
