PorPortugal 1997 Official 25 ECUs Official Commemorative "Ferdinand Magellan".

With this silver ECU, Portugal honours one of Europe's most famous seafarers and explorers: Ferdinand Magellan (c. 1480-1521), the first to circumnavigate the World. A Portuguese sailor in the service of the Spanish Crown, he searched for the Western route to the Moluccas, then known as the Spice islands. One the 20th September 1519, Magellan set sail from the port of San Lucar with five ships. On the 10th January 1520, he reached the mouth of the River Plate, and on 21st October 1520 he discovered the entrance to the Straits of Magellan which now bear his name. With only three of his original ships remaining, he sailed through the Straits, emerging into the Pacific Ocean on 28th November 1520. On 6th March 1521 he reached the Marianas Islands, and the Philippines 10 days later. Magellan was killed there in a battle with natives.
