Portugal 1996 Official 25 ECUs Commemorative "Pedro Alvarez Cabral" Silver Proof

Pedro Alvarez Cabral of Portugal (1460 to 1526) was one of Europe's greatest Seafarers and explorers. He was commissioned in 1500 by King Emmanuel of Portugal to take command of a thirteen ships, and sailed from Lisbon the very same year. Ordered to sail round the Cape of Good Hope to India, Cabral encountered heavy storms, and was forced to turn to the South-West. Instead of reaching India, Cabral landed on the coast of Brazil, and claimed it for the Portuguese Crown. With this silver ECU, Portugal honours the discoverer of Brazil, who returned to Lisbon in 1501, his ships loaded with the treasures of India.
