peter the Great (1772 - 1725) is regarded as the most important reformer amongst the Russian tzars. He ascended the Throne at an early age of 17 years. His special obsession was the expansion of the Russian Navy, since he regarded a powerful navel fighting force as an essential Pre-condition for expanding Russian influence. To his end, he even traveled incognito to the Netherlands to familarise himself with the crafts of shipbuilding and navigation. This famous visit was described in the opera "The Tzar and the Carpenter".
