THE OFFICIAL ECUs "Jacob van Campen" Netherlands

Jacob van Campen (1596 -1657) ranks among the great Dutch architects of the 17th century. He developed his own style as a young man when spending several years in Italy. his principal artistic influence was the architect and theorist, Andrea Palladio, the great master of classicism. When Jacob van Campen returned to his homeland, he became a pioneer of North, European classical architecture, characterised principally by facades with an almost total lack of ornamentation. Campen's masterpieces include the "Mauritshuis" and the royal Palace in Amsterdam. Built for Prince Johann Moritz of Nassau, the Mauritshuis now houses the Royal Art Gallery. A number of ecclesiastical buildings were also constructed to Campen's plans, including churches in Rensmonde and Haarlem.
