Hugo Grotius ranks as one of he most gifted scholars of the 17th century. He was born into a wealthy patrician family on 10.4.1583 in Delft, he first worked as a lawyer for the Dutch East India Company,. From 1607 on wards, he became the Chief Officer of Finance for the Province of Holland. During this period, he wrote a fundamental work on the law of international warfare and navigation. A convinced humanist, he was imprisoned in 1619 on religious Grounds. Two years later, he escaped to France. Whilst still in prison, he wrote a comprehensive History of Dutch Law. During his exile in France, he produced his greatest work: "Three Volumes on the Law of Warfare and Peace". This work was subsequently used as the foundation for modern national law. In 1635, Grotius was appointed as an emissary to the Swedish authorities. He also devoted more of his time to theological matters. He died on 28.8.1645 in Rostock.
