Speaking from the throne in the ballroom, she praised her son and hailed the reception as a tribute to his achievements. 'I can think of no better recognition of your first half century than this remarkable gathering.' Delighted by the occasion the Queen Mother mingled with the guests in a Palace floodlit for the first time since the VJ celebrations in 1995.
