Guernsey, 2008 Five Pounds RAF "THE GULF WAR" Silver Proof.

The Gulf War was initiated by Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and lasted from 2nd August 1990 to 28th February 1991. It involved an action against Iraq by a coalition force authorised by the United Nations, comprising elements from 35 nations. They began building up forces in Saudi Arabia, known as Operation Desert Shield, with Britain's contribution code-named Operation Granby. With 24 hours the RAF landed a squadron of AD Tornado F3s, which were conducting Defensive Counter Air operations within two hours. 48 hours later a squadron of Jaguar fighter-bombers was deployed in Oman. Nimrod MR2s played a vital role in maintaining the economic embargo of Iraq. Once hostilities started (Code-named Operation Desert Storm) only the RAF's Tornado GR1s were capable of delivering airfield denial weapons at night and at ultra low level. By day RAF Jaguars attacked artillery positions, ammunition dumps and missile site. After 38 days of intensive air attacks, the land campaign began.
