Gibraltar, 2008 Five Pounds RAF "AVRO 504" Silver Proof.
Occasionally in the history of aviation you come across an aircraft that is simply so good at its prime task that the only replacement for it is another one, until the next jump in technology comes along. One such aircraft is the Avro 504. The first versions of the Avro 504 were intended for use as two-seat reconnaissance bombers when they entered service in 1913. They carried out the world's first strategic bombing raid in 1914 , when 3 Royal Naval Air Service 504's attacked the airship shed at Friedrichshafen, destroying the hydrogen plant and damaging Zeppelin L.7. By 1915 most 504's had been superseded in front line squadrons by more advanced types.
