Guernsey, 2008 Five Pounds RAF "BATTLE OF BRITAIN 1940" Silver Proof.

In July 1940, Goring had some 2,800 aircraft at his disposal, faced on average day by 600 spitfires and Hurricanes. However, the RAF had home advantage, and the slow, lightly armed German medium bombers such as the Heinkel He 111 and the Dornier Do17, relied for protection on Bf109 fighter escorts, which limited their range. In August Hitler ordered the attacks to be switched from airfields London and other cities, encouraged by Goring in the belief that the RAF was almost destroyed. In fact Dowding, head of fighter command, still had about 700 aircraft at his disposal. On 15 September 1940 the Luftwaffe launched a mas daylight raid on London. The Germans lost 56 aircraft that day, against 26 for the RAF. Unaware how close the campaign against British radar and airfields had come to succeeding, the Germans began to lose heart. Aware that the invasion of Britain could not take place without air superiority, Hitler cancelled it. By May 1941 Hitler withdrew most of the aircraft threatening Britain.
