Gibraltar 1995 Official 14 ECUs Commemorative "Emperor Napoleon I" Silver Proof in capsule and certificate.

With this ECU, Gibraltar honours the French Emperor Napoleon I (1769-1821). His major campaigns and victories over the Austrians and Russians at Austerlitz (1805) and the Prussians at Jena and Auerstadt (1806) won him fame as a military leader of genius. Following the conquest of Portugal, Spain, Dalmatia, Holland, and parts of Germany, the Emperor attained the height of his power as the Ruler of Europe. The "Code Civil" published by Napoleon in 1804 became a model for the development of public law throughout Europe. The principle of equality is firmly embedded in this great legal work. With his concept of a pan-European state, Napoleon transcended the old feudal system and achieved the historic status of a great European in advance of his era. Following his military defeat by England and Prussia at Waterloo (1815), Napoleon was sent into exile.
