The coin shows the winding tail of the Northern Lights, the colourful light displays that transform the sky in the long cold nights of the far north. Modern science explains the regular light displays as the effect of tiny particles radiation from the sun on the nitrogen and oxygen in the atmosphere 100km up; in this way the Northern Lights, with their sharply varying intensity, colour and form, herald the approaching of winter and frost.
