The Sopwith Camel was the most successful British "Scout" (Fighter) plane of World War 1 accounting for 1,294 enemy aircraft. Unlike the earlier Sopwith Pup it was not easy or pleasant to fly, but it was highly maneuverable in the hand of a skilled pilot. The concentration of weight of pilot, engine, guns and fuel within the front seven feet of the aircraft. Perhaps the most famous fighter aircraft in the world, the Spitfire was designed by Reginald Mitchell. During if life over 22, 000 Spitfires all all types were manufactured. They served in all parts of the world, in interceptor, fighter-bomber, and also reconnaissance roles.
