This is an American 1887 large silver dollar given to me by a long and close friend of my late fathers, his name is Pete Elders, who sadly died 2014.
One Sunday morning after being at the fairground, the night before looking for old Victorian pennies at an early age of 14, I was sorting through them when as usual around 11.45am Pete pulls into our yard on his push bike. Now Pete was a drinking friend of my fathers, and from our house they would use the back entrance to the nearest pub the Royal oak, nickname "Charlie's parlour" Lesley's parlour would have been a better name. Opening time was 12.00noon so off they would go, dad would be heard to say will be back in the hour, Beatrice my Mother knew it would be nearer 3 in the afternoon. On return from the pub Pete would tell me one of his story's of when he worked in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show and how Buffalo Bill give him a silver dollar, next Pete said you can have it for your coin collection. Nothing was mentioned again for more than 50 years, until the winter of 2012, after a heavy snow storm I called in as usual to see if Pete needed any shopping, no shopping required, another friend of Pete's, Pete Hindmarch had just beaten me to it, so we just sat and watched TV then out of the blue, Pete said I have something for you Charlie!! Guess what it was, this silver dollar he promised me over 50 years ago? NOT FOR SALE it's now in my personal collection, mind you its provenance maybe questionable as ("Buffalo Bill's") real name was William Frederick Cody who died: January 10th 1917 well before Pete was born. Good story though.
