"2004 £2 Anniversary of the Steam Locomotive" Designed by Robert Lowe, the 2004 £2 coin celebrates the 200th anniversary of the first steam locomotive to run on rails. Following a bet between Samuel Homfray owner of the Penydarren Iron Works and Richard Crawshay of the Cyfartha Iron Works, in 1804 Richard Trevithick built a steam engine that could haul ten tons of iron from the Penydarren works along a tramway to Navigation house in Abercynon, a total distance of nine miles. The journey was completed in four hours and five minutes. The first ever steam-powered vehicle had been driven on rails. Trevithick'sb engine was the first true steam locomotive. "2004 £1 for Scotland" Designed by Edwina Ellis, the new £1 coin for 2004 pays homage to Scotland and features one of Scotland's most famous landmarks, the magnificent Forth Rail Bridge. The bridge was the invention of John Fowler and Benjamin Baker and is a cantilever design composed of three portions. A Marvel of Victorian engineering, the bridge was the biggest manmade construction of its time. "2004 50p 50th Anniversary of the Four-Minute Mile. When Roger Bannister ran a mile in less than four minutes in May 1954 it was not merely a remarkable sporting achievement it was a triumph of human spirit. Designed by James Butler, the new 50p coin commemorates Roger Bannister's remarkable achievement. GRADE: Silver Proof "Piedfort" FDC. Boxed with Royal Mint Certificates.
