Geoffrey de Havilland ha developed the idea, during the First World War' of a bomber so fast that it required neither escort nor defensive armament. The DH4, 9 and 9A had been imperfect realisations of that goal, but the Mosquito of the Second World War was to achieve it. This incredible performance was the result of a combination of great design and foresight. In 1938, de Havilland realised that metal was going to be scarce in the event of war, so designed the Mosquito to be made mostly of wood.
