Avro Lancaster PA474, operated by the Battles of Britain Memorial Flight, is one of just two surviving airworthy Lancasters. The Lancaster was the mainstay of the Allied bombing effort and took the brunt of the German defence efforts. Of the German defence efforts. Of the 7,366 built, almost half were lost on operations. The first flight of the Lancaster took place on 9th January 1941, and Avro delivered the first three operational aircraft to No. 44 Squadron on Christmas Eve 1941. The first operations took place on the night of 3/4 March 1942, when Lancasters laid mines off the German coast. Thereafter, Lancasters rapidly replaced Manchester's and other bombers, becoming the main strike weapon of the RAF.
