Alderney was liberated on 16th May 1945 and the first party of Islanders returned home on 15th December 1945. To commemorate the 50th Anniversary of V.E. Day, the end of World War II in Europe, the States of Alderney have authorised the minting of a limited number of £1 coins issued by the Royal Mint UK in Sterling Silver. The reverse of this beautiful coin designed and sculpted by Willem Vis, shows the letters "V.E." linked and superimposed on a stylised dove which is holding a laurel in its beak. The inscription reads "1945" and "1995" are divided by the Coat of Arms of Alderney.
