The reverse of the 1987 one pound coin shows an oak tree encircled by the Royal Diadem. The design is the work of silversmith Leslie Durbin. The obverse features the Raphael effigy of Her majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On the edge of the coin appears the Latin inscription DECUS ET TUTAMEN, meaning 'an ornament and a safeguard'.
