New Zealand, $5 Five Dollars 2002 'Hector's Dolphin' Silver Frosted Proof, Very low Mintage of only 2000 thus very Scarce, boxed with Certificate FDC,

£120.00

Hector's dolphins are distinguished by their rounded dorsal fin, black, grey and white markings, and gently sloping snout. Although they all share the same endearing small, rotund and interestingly coloured bodies, it is acknowledged that there are four genetically distinct species of Hector's dolphin - which are determined by the areas of New Zealand waters they inhabit. The critically endangered North Island Hector's dolphin is the world's smallest and rarest marine dolphin, with an estimated population of just 100. The larger South Island populations in Banks Coast, are also thought to be endangered. The risk of decline and extinction is significant for Hector's dolphins because they are slow breeders - producing just four calves in their 20 year life span - meaning the adverse affects of recreational and commercial net fishing, pollution and natural predators, such as sharks, are a serious threat to their long-term survival in our world. Obverse Design: Portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley of England.
