The Year encourages and promotes Maori language for all New Zealanders. The issue of this special double thickness silver 2o cent coin by the Reserve Bank of New Zealand is in honour of He Taonga Te Reo. The lettering - 19995 HE TAONGA TE REO - can be seen as a special inscription around the edge of the coin. The reverse of the coin features a well known Maori carving, taken from the gateway of a pa in the Rotorua district in the early nineteenth century.
