THE NATIONAL PARKS CENTENNIAL, 1887-1987. New Zealand's first national park, Tongariro, had its origins on 23 September 1887, when the paramount chief of Ngati Tuwharetoa, Te Heueu Tukino IV gifted his people's sacred mountains-Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu-to the people of New Zealand in the 100 years since, a further 10 national parks have been established, the most recent being Wanganui on 6 December 1986. Others, in order of establishment have been Egmont, Fiordland, Arthurs Pass, Abel Tasman, Mount Cook, Urewera, Nelson Lakes, Westland, and Mount Aspiring: Three of these, Fiordland, Westland and Mount Cook have been nominated as World Heritage Sites. Three maritime parks; Bay of Islands, Hauraki Gulf, and Marlborough Sounds; and many forest parks throughout the country, complement the national parks in preserving New Zealand's natural heritage for the enjoyment of present and future generations. Parks Centennial, 1887-1987. The obverse design on all coins in this set shows the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty The Queen, with the inscription "Elizabeth II New Zealand 1987" around the periphery. The reverse design of the dollar coin mint in Sterling (0.925) Silver is by Maurice Conly M.B.E. of Waikanae, N.Z.; the reverse designs of the 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20, and 50c being by the late James Berry. The 1987 Proof Year Set, with the Silver Dollar Issued to commemorate the National Parks Centennial, 1887-1987 of New Zealand, is based on the official logo of the National Parks Centennial, with the inscription "National Parks Centennial One Dollar" around the periphery.
