New Zealand's first national park, Tongariro, had its origins on 23 September 1887, when the paramount chief of Ngati Tuwharetoa, Te Heueu Tukino IV gifted his people's sacred mountains-Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu-to the people of New Zealand in the 100 years since, a further 10 national parks have been established, the most recent being Wanganui on 6 December 1986. Others, in order of establishment have been Egmont, Fiordland, Arthurs Pass, Abel Tasman, Mount Cook, Urewera, Nelson Lakes, Westland, and Mount Aspiring: Three of these, Fiordland, Westland and Mount Cook have been nominated as World Heritage Sites.
