£46.00

New Zealand, 1986 Proof Coin Year Set FDC (7 Coins) with the sterling (0.925) Silver Dollar "The Kakapo Bird" plus the One Cent coin to Fifty Cents. The Kakapo with less than 50 birds known to exist in the wild, the kakapo is arguably New Zealand's rarest endemic bird. Also called the Owl-Parrot because of its facial disc of owl-like whiskers, it is the largest of all parrots by weight and is the only parrot in the world with a lek-mating system. This involves elaborate and intriguing courtship behaviour whereby male kakapo will excavate shallow depressions or "bowls" linked by tracks. From here they will perform a variety of displays the best known of which is the booming call. Nocturnal, ground-nesting and totally flightless the kakapo is a uniquely vulnerable bird. It is shy and secretive and with mottled moss-green plumage, it relies on its natural camouflage for protection. However, when needed, the kakapo can travel with surprising speed. The pressures that have forced kakapo to near-extinction are many but introduced predatory mammals such as stoats, rats and feral cats have perhaps had the greatest impact of all. The long-term future for kakapo relies on their relocation to suitable islands where predators are absent or can be removed. The obverse design on all coins in this set shows the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty The Queen, with the inscription "Elizabeth II New Zealand 1986" around the periphery. The reverse design of the dollar coin was the work of Maurice M.B.E. of Waikanae, and prepared by the Royal Mint; the reverse designs of the 1c, 2c, 5c, 10c, 20c, and 50c being by the late James Berry.
