New Zealand, 1984 Dollar Silver Proof, "Black Robin" Boxed with Certificate FDC.

£45.00

New Zealand, Dollar 1984 Silver Proof FDC. The Chatham Island "Black Robin". Struck by the Royal Mint UK in Sterling (0.925) Silver Weight 27.216 gm. Diameter 38.735mm. The obverse bears the Arnold Machin effigy of Her Majesty The Queen, with the inscription "Elizabeth II New Zealand 1984" around the periphery. The reverse design, prepared by the Royal Mint, shows the Chatham Island black robin on a branch of Chatham Island akeake, with the name of the bird below the branch. The words "One Dollar" appear around the upper left quarter of the periphery. The Chatham Island Black Robin, endemic to New Zealand's Chatham Island group, 800 km east of the South Island of New Zealand, the bird, one of the world's rarest, appears to have been rescued from the brink of extinction by a N.Z. Wildlife Service cross-fostering programme. From a low of 5 in 1980 with only one successful breeding pair, the very successful 1983-84 season has seen numbers increase to 20. Now established on 2 predator=free islands the black robin may soon be able to assume the unassisted recovery of its species, although in the meantime the programme will continue. GRADE: Stunning FDC in Case and Certificate.
