New Zealand, 1982 Dollar Rev: 'Takahe Bird' Silver Proof Case & Certificate FDC

£46.00

New Zealand Dollar 1982 Silver Proof FDC. Sterling silver; weight 27.216 gm, diameter 38.735 mm, grained edge. The obverse bears the effigy of Her Majesty The Queen drawn by the late James Berry, with the words "Elizabeth II Queen of New Zealand" separated from the date by two florets. The reverse design, prepared by the Royal Mint, United Kingdom, features a New Zealand bird, the Takahe (Notornis mantelli), facing left with the words "ONE DOLLAR" around the top of the coin. Endemic to New Zealand and found naturally only in Fiord land in the South Island, this large flightless rail, with a present population of approximately only 120 is one of the world’s rarest birds. The Takahe, a stocky bird standing about 51 cm (20 in) high, inhabits the sub-alpine tussock grasslands which provide food, shelter, and nesting sites. In winter, although many birds remain above the bush line, some move to lower altitude beech forest to feed on fern rhizomes, grasses and sedges. A 40 percent population decline since 1972 is attributable mainly to competition by deer for available food, and predation by stoats. A conservation programme has been embarked upon that hopefully will enable the bird to survive in its natural habitat. GRADE: Stunning FDC Boxed with Certificate.
