In 1981 the large one dollar coin commemorated the Royal Visit of 12-20 October 1981, when the Queen visited New Zealand following a Commonwealth Heads of Government conference in Melbourne. The obverse features an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by a New Zealand artist James Berry. The reverse features an oak leave with two acorns intertwined with a Kauri (native New Zealand) plant's seed cone.
