The first coins bear the legend "Hong Kong" were issued in 1863. These coins comprised a silver ten cents, and one cent, and one mil in bronze. In 1866 a branch of the Royal Mint was opened in Hong Kong although this ceased to strike coins after 1868. In 1935 the Hong Kong dollar was adopted as the standard currency unit, with all lower denominations related to this dollar. Five Dollars: Introduced in 1976 as a 10-sided coin. The present shape was adopted in 1980. Struck in cupro-nickel the coin weighs 13.50g and has a diameter of 27mm.
Two Dollars: Introduced in 1975, this coin features on the reverse, a lion with the "night-shining pearl". Struck in cupro-nickel the coin has a 12 - scalloped shape, weights 8.41g and has a diameter of 28mm.
One Dollar: Introduce in its present form in 1978. The coin is struck in cupro-nickel, weighs 7.1g and has a diameter of 25.5mm.
