Australian $5 Sydney Olympics 'Table Tennis' AIuminum/Bronze UNC in Capsule

£6.00

Issued in September, 1999, this coin is the 23rd in a 28 coin collection of Sydney 2000 Aluminium Bronze specimen produced jointly by the Royal Mint in Canberra and the Perth Mint. The coin is presented in a capsule of issue. Table tennis, which debuted in the Olympic Games in 1988 at Seoul, began in the 1870s with cigar-box-lids for rackets and a carved champagne cork for a ball. Today, players complete for big money, wield high-tech rackets and smash the ball at speeds up to 180 km/h and the spin of the ball up to 180 revolutions per second. Table tennis has become the world's largest participation sport, with 40 million competitive players worldwide and countless millions playing recreationally.
