It is appropriate to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the penny Black - the first adhesive postage stamp - at the international exhibition Stamp World '90 in London, the city where it all began. Philately as known to the modern world is recognised from 1864 under the name which was derived from the Greek; true philately today encompasses many branches and many specialties.
