The fifty pence coin has become the traditionally chosen to celebrate significate events in European history and this custom continues in 1998 with a commemorative fifty pence coin to mark the United Kingdom's 25th anniversary of membership and its six-month Presidency of the European Union during the first half of the year. Created by the sculptor John Mills, the reverse design features a celebratory pattern of twelve stars of the European Union together with the anniversary dates 1973 and 1998. The European Economic Community was founded in 1957 and has grown into the European Union of today. The original members were Belgium, France, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and The Netherlands. Denmark, Ireland and the United Kingdom joined in 1973, Greece in 1981 and Portugal and Spain in 1986. The former East Germany was admitted as part of reunified Germany and Austria, Finland and Sweden became members in 1995. This commemorative coin set celebrates the United Kingdom's 25th anniversary of membership with two Brilliant Uncirculated fifty pence coins.
