Tuvalu's Coinage A Brief History
A distinctive coinage was not introduced until 1976. when the Ellice Islands became the separate constitutional dependency of Tuvalu. A full range of circulating 1985 coins was struck by the Royal Mint and comprised of one - and two-cent pieces in bronze, five-, ten-, twenty-, and fifty-cent pieces in cupro-nickel, and a multi-sided one-dollar coin, also obverse all show the Arnold Machin portrait of Her Majesty The Queen, while the reverse feature interesting examples of local marine life.
