The commemorative reverse has been designed by Avril Vaughan and marks the role of the UN in the emancipation of women across the world. To improve the lives of women everywhere has been an important long-term objective of the UN. The obverse bears the Arms of Liberia which picture the first settlers returning to African soil in 1822 on the USS Alligator. The plough symbolises the work of the freed slaves in the cultivation of their new homeland and their joy and optimism is captured in the accompanying motto 'The love of Liberty Brought Us Here.'
