Australia, 1937 Coronation Crown, Issued to commemorate the Coronation of King George VI. aEF

£56.00

With the Coronation of George VI imminent, the then Australian Federal Treasurer R.G. Casey believed that a coin should be released to commemorate this momentous occasion. The Royal Mint in London had already begun to strike commemorative crowns for significant events, and so Casey felt that Australia showed follow suit. When the coin was released, however, it met unfavourable reviews. Much larger than any other circulating coinage, it was considered too bulky for everyday use, and even dubbed "Casey's Cartwheel." The obverse features the bare head of King George VI facing left, with legend: 'GEORGIVS VI D.G. BR: OMN : REX. F : IND : IMP. The reverse features the jewel encrusted royal crown, with the date underneath. The reverse legend reads 'COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA ONE CROWN'.
