£98.00

1997-1998 United Kingdom Silver Proof "Piedfort" £2 Two-Coin Set. Both coins minted in Sterling (.925) silver with the outer ring plated with fine gold. Diameter: 28.40mm Weight: 24.00g each. Both coins feature the reverse design created by Bruce Rushin for the original coin while the obverse of the 1997 coin bears the Queen's portrait by Raphael Maklouf and the 1998 coin features the new royal effigy by Ian Rank-Broadley, FRBS, and FSNAD. Edge inscription: "STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS". The £2 coin, being made up of two component parts of differing alloys, has the distinction of being the first bi-colour coin struck for general circulation in the United Kingdom. Piedfort coins are struck on thicker than normal blanks. As their name suggests they are closely associated with France where from the twelfth century they were apparently used by the King as presentation pieces. GRADE: "Piedfort" Silver Proof as Issued by the Royal Mint with Box & Certificate of Authenticity. FDC.
