UK, 1992 Ten Pence, "Standard" Silver Two-Coin Set, FDC.

£36.00

Ten Pence, 1992 "Standard" Silver Two-Coin Set, FDC. Old and New coins, to commemorate the introduction into circulation of a new smaller ten pence coin in 1992, the Royal Mint is issuing a limited number of silver Proof two-coin sets containing the last of the original ten pence coins and the first of the new. With the recent alteration to the five pence and the planned withdrawal of the large ten pence, and its predecessor the florin, we bib a final farewell to the old coinage. These changes effectively remove from circulation the last traces of coins struck before decimalisation. Yet, ironically, it was the silver florin, first struck in 1849, that was intended to be a tentative step towards decimal coinage, bearing the words ONE TENTH OF A POUND to indicate the reason for its appearance. Both coins in this set bear on the reverse Christopher Ironside's design featuring a lion passant guardant royally crowned. Raphael Maklouf's elegant portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II is featured on the obverse of each of the coins. SPECIFICATIONS: The larger sized ten pence weighs 11.31 grammes and measures 28.50 millimetres in diameter, while the new, smaller coin weighs 6.50 grammes and measures 24.50 millimetres in diameter. The milling on the edge of the new ten pence is more pronounced. Both coins are legal tender and have been struck in sterling (.925) silver to the very highest Proof quality. GRADE: Choice Proof FDC as Issued by the Royal Mint.
